Community-based tourism
Belgium
In many destinations, tourism tends to be “all inclusive”: tourists pay an international tour operator, which captures most of the profit before it reaches the destination countries. Many hotels are themselves owned by multinational chains. The UNDP Accelerator Labs are working on connecting and structuring local businesses so that they can compete with these operators, keeping a larger part of the value in the destination country. As well as bona fide innovations, this board includes many examples of local businesses providing high-quality or authentic tourism services. Their creativity and pervasiveness signal that community-based tourism is, in many places, more viable than one might think.
